As a Rookie Yard Team Leader, when you're not out plowing, you'll support yard operations, making sure you work toward earning as many hours as possible over the course of the winter season. Job Features

As a Rookie Yard Team Leader and Snow Plow Driver in Training, you will be responsible for operating snow plow trucks with v-box spreaders and managing small teams for private properties. Your duties will include quality control, efficient completion of work, and basic support tasks such as equipment maintenance and staff scheduling.

Our winter employment contract is an extended six-month contract that operates according to the weather with guaranteed standby pay even if there is no snow. What You’ll Do:

  • A Lot of Training: As a Rookie Team Leader, you’ll have numerous opportunities to develop and hone your snow plowing and team management skills. Throughout the season, you’ll be given hands-on training in the field, especially during breaks in weather events when you’re not actively plowing. You’ll participate in training runs to practice your skills in real-time scenarios, ensuring you're prepared to handle a variety of snow removal situations. This extensive training ensures that you’re not only gaining experience but also becoming proficient in operating equipment, managing your crew, and executing efficient snow removal operations. With each training session, you'll gain more confidence, making you ready for any challenge that comes your way during the season. Training will provide you with practical, in-field experience, making you a more effective and confident team leader.
  • Lead a Crew: You’ll manage a small team (1-3 people) for snow removal operations across Toronto, providing vital services to both commercial and residential properties. You'll lead by example and assist in overseeing the successful completion of snow and ice clearance tasks.
  • Operate Snow Plow Trucks: Learn how to drive and operate snow plows with v-box spreaders for de-icing and snow clearance. This position is perfect for those looking to expand their skills in snow removal and equipment operation.
  • Yard Support: When you're not actively plowing, you will assist with essential yard tasks, including equipment maintenance, loading or delivering salt, property maintenance or upkeep, site quality control and remediation, and other operational support related to snow and ice maintenance work. By performing yard duties, you will meet and usually exceed your guaranteed 30 standby hours per pay period, maximizing your seasonal earnings.
  • Flexible Hours: As the work is on an on-call basis, you will have the flexibility to work irregular hours, including overnight shifts and weekends, based on weather events. This flexibility allows you to earn as many hours as possible while gaining valuable experience in snow plowing and yard operations.

Position Summary:

  • Snow Plow Driver in Training: Lead snow removal operations for private properties, assist in yard tasks, and help ensure that you meet your guaranteed standby hours for a full seasonal commitment.
  • Competitive Pay: Easily earn $15,000 or more per winter season for approximately 600 hours of actual work—plus, the opportunity to work more hours for high performers who demonstrate a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Extended Winter Contract: A full-length, stable contract from Nov 1st to Apr 30th, providing job security throughout the winter months.
  • Guaranteed Minimum Hours: Receive 30 standby hours per pay period, including yard work, ensuring a stable paycheck even if there’s no snow.
  • Multiple Yard Locations: Two convenient yard locations (East and West) in Toronto, making commuting easier regardless of where you live.

Job Features:

  • Operate Lighter-Duty Plow Trucks: Work with 8+ foot snow plows equipped with tailgate spreaders to clear driveways, parking lots, and other paved areas.
  • On-Call Availability: Be ready to work 24/7 during snow events, including overnight shifts and holiday work, ensuring you're always available when needed. This is an emergency response position, so your attendance is mandatory for all scheduled shifts.
  • Hourly Pay: Earn $25-$29 per hour, based on experience, reliability, and effectiveness.
  • 8% Vacation Pay: Added to every paycheck, ensuring you earn additional compensation for your hard work.
  • Performance Bonus: Eligible for a performance bonus at the end of the season based on performance, reliability, and attitude.

Job Requirements:

  • Availability for Flexible Hours: Must be open to early morning, late-night, and weekend shifts, including holidays.
  • Local Commuting: Must live within 45 minutes of either our East or West yard locations to ensure timely availability.
  • No Snow Plowing Experience Required: No prior snow plowing experience required; however, any relevant experience will be considered an asset.
  • Outdoor Labor Experience: At least 2 years of physical labor experience requiring medium to heavy effort, preferably in outdoor environments.
  • Valid G-Level Driver’s License: Minimum of 1 year of insured commercial driving experience.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to perform manual labor in cold weather conditions and handle heavy equipment safely.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor Phone 24/7: Stay on top of dispatch and schedule updates to ensure quick response times and readiness to go when needed.
  • Lead Small Crews: Manage a team of 1-3 people to ensure efficient and safe snow removal operations.
  • Assist with Equipment Maintenance: Help with basic equipment maintenance tasks, such as fueling, greasing, and minor repairs, ensuring all vehicles and machinery are in good working order.
  • Yard Support: Take part in loading salt, organizing equipment, and performing other essential duties that contribute to overall operations and guarantee you meet and exceed the required standby hours.
  • Quality Control: Ensure all tasks are completed safely and efficiently, providing quality control for both snow removal and yard activities.
  • Physical Tasks: Perform tasks such as lifting (up to 50 lbs), climbing, and operating heavy equipment in a safe manner to keep operations running smoothly.

  • Industry-leading 8% vacation pay, added on top of every paycheque
  • Guaranteed minimum 30 working hours per each semi-monthly pay period even if there is no snow and no work (minimum 60 hours guaranteed per month)
  • Eligible for end of season performance bonus of up to $500 or more! (based on performance competition)
  • Potential use of company vehicle for duration of contract as required for work obligations
  • No paperwork! Fully modern equipment with electronic logging
  • Must live within a maximum of 45 minutes commuting distance from our Scarborough Yard (EAST) or Toronto Office & Yard (WEST)
  • Yes, we have TWO yards (one in the East end and one in the West end)- which makes it easy to get to work regardless of where you live in the GTA

Job Requirements

  • This position requires early morning or late night starts, extended hours, and weekend duty including holidays
  • This position requires 24/7 availability to respond to weather events at any time of day or night
  • Having an open schedule is a must. We work according to the weather, so any time of day or night, if winter strikes we go out!
  • No commercial snow removal experience is required, however any such past experience is considered an asset!
  • Minimum of 2 years outdoor labour experience requiring medium to heavy physical effort
  • Minimum 3 years of insured driving experience with a G-level license
  • Minimum of 1 years commercial driving experience operating pickup trucks or greater
  • Clean Driver’s Abstract provided upon acceptance of job offer (one minor infraction is okay)
  • Excellent winter driving abilities with any type of automatic transmission vehicle, often in tight or narrow quarters
  • Good verbal and written interpersonal communication and leadership skills
  • Excellent knowledge of consumer technology (Windows PC, Microsoft Office, Android Tablet, GPS Navigation, Smart Phone, Common Mobile Apps)
  • Must have a modern smart phone with a basic internet data plan and full text messaging/voice call capabilities
  • Able to operate equipment and machinery while monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex, and rapid adjustments, such as hydraulic snow plow, salter, dump truck, snow blower, and snow shovel.
  • Able to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing highly skilled movements such as operating vehicles and equipment controls, or climbing in and out of trucks.
  • Able to exert moderately heavy (up to 50 pounds) physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Able to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, and textures associated with job-related objects, materials, and tasks.
  • This position requires the ability to perform heavy, manual labor safely, with a minimal degree of physical difficulty, effectively and efficiently.
  • Must be able to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods; perform tasks which require hand-eye and arm-hand coordination, such as shifting gears on a vehicle or using a snowblower.
  • Must be able to read and communicate in basic English, although we have a very multi-lingual environment.
  • Must have ability to withstand exposure to seasonal winter conditions and work outside in cold weather, greasy or oily, dusty, or other outdoor conditions, as well as loud or unpleasant noises.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor your cell phone 24/7 in order to promptly and quickly respond to all schedule updates sent by dispatch via text message
  • Arrive to work at our yard in a speedy fashion when called upon, ready to go at a moments notice all winter long
  • Direct and manage medium-sized crews (4-6 people) while ensuring all assigned duties are performed properly and safely at all times throughout each shift
  • Ensure top-notch quality control and efficient completion of all work as required to meet service demands, time constraints, and operational deadlines
  • Assist with performance of routine equipment maintenance/repair tasks such as changing vehicle fluids, fueling, greasing, painting, etc.
  • Assist with simple opening and closing shift duties such as loading ice melter with a machine or directing groups of staff
  • Comply with and help enforce all safety precautions, operational procedures, directions, rules, policies, and regulations
  • Ensure all team members are following rules and directions at all times
  • Assist with one on one training and individual remediation as required
  • Assist with quality control services and one on one communications as required
